Two landscapes. One path. A hidden world of wonder.

The Wetland & Woodland Wander at Illawong Nature Reserve is a 1.5–2 hour guided walk inspired by the Japanese practice of forest bathing. This gentle 2.2 km loop invites you to slow down and explore a living cross-section of biodiversity — where ancient riverbeds meet claystone ridges, and wetlands open into shaded woodland.

With your guide leading the way, you’ll begin at the ponds — one of the best places to observe the dramatic transition between ecosystems. From there, the path meanders through gum and banksia woodland, then dips toward the wetland fringe where butterflies, birdlife, tortoises, and fungi thrive.

Along the way, we’ll slow the pace, pausing often to notice the details: birdsong shifting through the canopy, the texture of bark under your fingertips, the change in the air as we come out of the wetland wetland. Binoculars and ID sheets are provided to help you focus your awareness, while your guide shares light stories of Illawong’s flora, fauna, and geology.

Keep an eye out for bird nesting boxes high in the trees, bloodwoods glistening with red sap, and signs of yellow-bellied gliders. Midway, you’ll stand beneath a giant — the second-largest gum tree in New South Wales, with an 11-metre base diameter — a silent elder of the landscape.

This is not a race to cover ground — it’s a wander where stories and sights unfold at their own pace, and you finish feeling clearer, calmer, and just a little brighter.
